Ivy Leaf is a friendly short mat bowling club in Millmead Hall, Wolverton. No green to maintain, no membership committee to impress, just good bowls and better company, all year round.
Short mat bowls is played indoors on a 60 foot mat rather than an outdoor green, which means we play winter as well as summer. The aim is the same as its outdoor cousin — get your woods closer to the jack than the opposing players — but a session fits neatly into two hours, and there's always a chair for whoever isn't bowling that end.
The club started with four members and a mat borrowed from the church hall. We're now around forty strong, ranging from youngsters of fifty to members well into their nineties, and we still play in that same hall by Wolverton station.
Drop in for any session — you don't need to commit to any morning in advance.
| Day | Time | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| Tuesday | 10:00am–12:00pm | Club Bowl, open to all |
| Thursday | 10:00am–12:00pm | Club Bowl — friendly, competitive |
Most of our members had never touched a wood before they walked in the door.
Come along to either morning session. Flat shoes are all you need. We'll introduce you around and get you on a mat.
The club keeps spare sets for newcomers, so there's nothing to buy until you know you want to keep coming.
A member will talk you through the rules and scoring as you play — within the hour most people are playing comfortably.
Your first two visits are free — join whenever you're ready.
We play in the main hall. Come in through the main door and straight through to the hall.
